Visiting an ELCA church: worship, baptism and belonging

Religious Values guide · Updated

An Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregation brings Lutheran teaching into the ordinary life of a parish. Worship centers on hearing God's promise in Scripture and receiving grace through the sacraments. Communities may look and sound different while sharing that denomination's confession and connection to a regional synod.

This page focuses on congregational life. The companion ELCA beliefs guide explains the denomination's confessional and organizational foundations in more detail.

Following the service

Bible readings, a sermon, prayer and Holy Communion are common features of ELCA worship. A printed or projected order may guide responses and hymns. The music can range from a traditional hymn setting to other cultural and contemporary forms. Look for how the service announces grace and brings the community together, rather than assuming that one musical style defines a Lutheran church.[1]

Baptism and a continuing life of faith

Lutheran teaching understands baptism as God's action and promise, including for infants. Learning continues afterward through family life, congregational teaching and opportunities such as confirmation. Adults entering church life can also ask for instruction. The denomination's account of faith makes room for questions and emphasizes trust in God's promise, rather than requiring a visitor to arrive with a finished theological education.[1]

Finding a place in the congregation

A congregation belongs within the ELCA's wider relationship of congregations, synods and churchwide ministries. Local opportunities may include study, service, music and pastoral care. Ask how membership works, how the congregation chooses leaders and how it supports people at different stages of life. These questions connect a welcoming first visit with the practical responsibilities of belonging over time.[2]

Common questions

Is an ELCA synod the same as the Missouri Synod?

No. Within the ELCA, a synod is a regional expression of that church. The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod is a separate denomination. The same word is being used at different organizational levels.[2]

What should I ask about Communion on my first visit?

Check the congregation's invitation and ask a pastor about preparation, children and any dietary needs. A denomination's general sacramental teaching does not tell you all the practical arrangements for a particular service.
